About

The author aboard his hybrid Yamaha TZ250 powered by a 660cc four-stroke Single. It roared like a beast, and it rode like one, too.

Most race fans see the few moments of introduction before the sighting lap, the race and the post-race interviews. Trying to understand what professional motorcycle road racing is, based on that, is like trying to understand an iceberg by ordering a scotch on the rocks at your local bar. The motivations, the pressures, the needs of all of the parties involved in racing dictate what happens when the green flag drops. For those who are interested, the race before the race is equally fascinating.

This blog is dedicated to that idea.

All I hope to do here is to help explain why you see what you see on your TV, computer, tablet or smart phone screen when you want to watch the finest sport devised by man. Pride, ego, corporate culture and above all tens of millions of dollars are at stake at the sport's highest levels. Occasionally, I'll write about specific races and events. But mostly, I'll offer my thoughts and insights into the forces that shape motorcycle road racing as we see it.

That is, of course, when I'm not at the track myself, knee-down, chased by the ghosts of every lap I've ever done in the past, pushing for a personal best and seeking that one perfect lap.
